Mar. 13th, 2003 06:37 pmDecided not to go out today.
It's been ages since i slept well and spent the whole day lazing. Gods, I love this. Sweet laziness. Idleness. With a big glass of cool apple/cranberry/grape juice,
wolfsbride to babble with and lots of sexy Snape fics.

Against my better judgement...

Well, at least it's not Snape, as that would be too weird. : P
Enjoy your rest. I've got a housing association meeting to attend, so I'm actually busy today!
Love,
Mark

Re: Against my better judgement...
Date: 2003-03-14 10:28 am (UTC)Well... It varies as to how secure I feel, but it didn't have any really awkward questions.
Of course, you're talking to a chap who does weight training* and likes Oscar Wilde, and there are some people who'd question my masculinity because of this.
More generally, I think a lot of men are put off by slashy things 'cos they're afraid they'll get turned on by it. There's a simple way of tackling that fear: face it. I've read a few of Viccy's stories and seen some of Krizu's faked pics, and it's failed to turn my head 'round in that regard.

*there are some people who'd question my masculinity because of this.*
Really??? I'd have thought that would be the *height* of manliness! Go figure. O_o
*More generally, I think a lot of men are put off by slashy things*
I on't mind people who don't want to read it but I do hate it when they insist on yelling at me about how sick I am for reading/writing it. So nice to meet someone who can do the levelheaded thing.
*extends paw* I don't think we've been formally introduced. Pleased to meet ya! :D

Re: Against my better judgement...
Date: 2003-03-16 12:36 am (UTC)[Tell me, do I call you WB, or do you have a name?]
I can understand why people find the concept of slash difficult to understand, as not everyone 'sees gay people', but I don't understand why people should be hostile towards it -- it smacks of homophobia.
WRT weight training & Oscar Wilde: people tend to confuse the former with bodybuilding, an activity which has strong homosexual connotations in some people's eyes; I don't understand why it is that Wilde is still viewed solely in terms of his sexuality -- sure, he had a very rough deal, but I think it's his work that people should focus on.
As for the security of my masculinity, it more or less depends on my overall mood. I've been subject to depression since adolescence. If I'm going through a bad patch (emotionally) I tend to question myself on a whole range of topics, including intellect, competence, self-worth, and so on.
Well, that's dampened the mood. I think I'll go now.
All the best,
Mark

[it smacks of homophobia.]
I dunno if it's homophobia or just general idiocy. 99% of flames seems to come from younguns. At least it seems like it from the vocabulary. Too much time on the paws I guess.
[sure, he had a very rough deal, but I think it's his work that people should focus on.]
Sigh... If people *could* focus on the work instead of the color, race or orientation, the world would be less annoying. At least I'd like to think so. In truth something else would probably come up and take it's place.
[Well, that's dampened the mood. I think I'll go now.]
Oh no! I've dampened the mood! *sobs bitterly* I'm sorry :|

Date: 2003-03-17 02:16 am (UTC)Hmm, somebody's got something to hide... WB it is, then.
"Too much time on the paws I guess."
Or hatred. I've noticed the spelling thing, but it doesn't seem to be isolated to kids.
Perhaps ignorance breeds prejudice?

Re: Against my better judgement...
Date: 2003-03-17 06:18 am (UTC)Of course it does. People fear what they don't understand and all that.
The thing that gets me is that they don't even try to understand, they just lash out in hostility. And also, if they know they don't like the subject, why do they read. That' really bugs me.
And of course, prejudice begets prejudice, although it's much harder these days to totally indoctrinate a child since they get exposed to so many different cultures and opinions, but sadly there are those that still parrot the nonsense they hear their parents speak.

Re: Against my better judgement...
Date: 2003-03-17 11:10 am (UTC)Some people find learning new ideas (or unlearning old ones) difficult. They're to be pitied, to some extent, but there's not much you can do in the short term other than whatever keeps *you* centered -- whether that means ignoring them, avoiding them, or even arguing them down.
