Of course it does. People fear what they don't understand and all that.

The thing that gets me is that they don't even try to understand, they just lash out in hostility. And also, if they know they don't like the subject, why do they read. That' really bugs me.

And of course, prejudice begets prejudice, although it's much harder these days to totally indoctrinate a child since they get exposed to so many different cultures and opinions, but sadly there are those that still parrot the nonsense they hear their parents speak.

Some people find learning new ideas (or unlearning old ones) difficult. They're to be pitied, to some extent, but there's not much you can do in the short term other than whatever keeps *you* centered -- whether that means ignoring them, avoiding them, or even arguing them down.
