Am watching NCIS 3x01 and once again am baffled by the sheer stupidity of the whole dealing with death thing.

No, not the grieving and the vengeance.

Are coroners really allowed to perform autopsies to people they've worked with? People they know? There was Alexx talking to Speedle while she cut him open and now Ducky's working on Kate.

I just find it inconceivable, just like the fic way of colleagues doing the rape kits and other exams. It feels too personal, too invasive and too traumatic.

Does this really happen in real life?

I've now pathologists who've done autopsies on colleagues because, you know, usually somebody has to. But they've died of natural causes. But it's not allowed to do one on a close family member at least. That wouldn't be very legal.

I just find it really really weird. Especially since in these tv shows, the main team at the forensics unit/hospital/agency is usually portrayed as people even closer than family, trusting each other and spending like 20/7 together.

*boggles the mind*

I can totally understand why. And I don't really find it a very legal approach. Somebody has to do it, but at least around here it's somebody with just a working relationship and usually a volunteer.

Also, I've never found a unit as close as the ones they show on tv :) It's just work after all...
