Well now. Seems that I hit something babbling about cartoon slash. Sorry if the topic squicks anyone, but I think I should babble more.
I remember reading some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles slash a while back. Also some Darkwing Duck stuff. It wasn't very good (no surprise there), but I liked it anyway.
People who get freaked over cartoon slash usually read manga and anime stuff. How does that differ from cartoons? By the target audience? Am not convinced. But I do agree that there are things we all loved as kids and don't want to see dabbled over.
[have to ask.... if slash is okay, but writing it about something that holds a personal value to me is disturbing, does it mean I'm saying that slash is wrong?]
Anyway. I started to think about squicks. Been reading all sorts of slash for seven years now, and I think I've read all sorts of stuff. Does anything squick me anymore?
In a way yes. Then again no.
I used to be all hesitant reading incest fic or RPS. Did read some and felt kind of icky. I still remember the nightmares I had after reading my first RPS. But I got over it.
My favorite author ever (am I just like pimping the Android here again?) wrote a lovely Indy/Henry Jones sr. series and even though I was initially really squicked by the idea of a father/son slash fic, I must confess that I do like the series now. Am also a Weasley incest fan and you can give me good Elladan/Elrohir anytime. Most of you already know what happened with me and RPS, thanks to
wax_jism. Long story short: read it, wrote some under a pseudonym, refuse to be ashamed of it even though my stories were kinda crappy.
Things that do squick me aren't really about fandoms or pairings. I'm squicked by badly written porn. Especially BDSM, where they use no safe words, and instead of erotic mind games they just beat the crap out of each other. Idiotic sex scenes with no lube and raging tumescences. Scat games and golden showers.
Also, am squicked by grown men acting as teenagers in fic. By very private characters walking hand in hand with their lovers and calling them sweetheart. People lusting after each other confused with love. Abusing relatinships. Partner betrayal and rape. Chanslash.
I also think that religious slash is dubious at best. So is writing deathfic about RPS. Am not completely happy about overly porny photomanips either, even though I can kind of see the aesthetical value. Really hate it if it's about an underage actor (glares at people who make NC-17 photomanips about Harry Potter kids).
Hopping off the soapbox now. :P
It's funny how I've talked with many people about what we like about slash, but not really about what we hate about it. Is there anyone who has no squicks? I doubt it.
