Torchwood 2x03

So can we say hmm... okay... ew... and of course a few

Okay, so the story was rather decent as a sci-fi story, but the plot holes in the actual telling were big enough to drive a Sycorax ship through it. Am not too impressed by Helen Raynor's scripts; the Ghost Machine was decent (though the presence of Gareth Thomas gave me flashbacks to certain B7 marathons), but good Gods it would be nice to forget the Human Daleks.

*shudders*

Aaaanyway, the script. I liked the ghosts, and the idea of the past being weird and creepy as it manifested in the ghosts even though we all knew it wasn't about restless spirits. It's just that it would have had more impact if it hadn't been used already in this show... Remember that other Torchwood episode written by Helen Raynor? Yeah.

The emotional depth of the whole Tosh/Tommy thing was weird. As long as it was all about the possibilities, it sort of worked. Then when it went to actual romance... not so much. By the end of the episode, it was all blah, and I wanted to kick Tosh. Tommy's silly exclamation that he'd do anything if Tosh only asked gave them so many possibilities, and it felt like the whole story fell flat.

Tommy was actually a good character, especially with the shell shocked -thing and his rather brazen and cool character slipping into an almost child- like panic in the end. Very good.

Of course all the angst about his fate was total crap with the fact that Tosh could have actually told the 1918 Torchwood to come back and save him if necessary. Someone should have at least suggested it, and then been told it was impossible because of whatever.

*jumps over the plot hole*

The rift key thing was also a deus ex machina even JKR would be proud of...

I actually liked the episode, once I'd switched my brain to 'off', a useful skill for all who like Torchwood. Jack was pretty as always, and there were moments of whoa. While his smooch with Ianto brought forward the usual ewwwww, it wasn't as bad as usual. As long as Ianto stays at the office and brings coffee, I can almost like the character.

*cough* The kisses were hot, though. John Barrowman is such a slut. But in a good way.

Owen was okay as usual (hey, I happen to like the weasel), and even Gwen was fine. The 1918 Torchwood was cool, and I wouldn't mind seeing them again.

Am now looking forward to the next episode! Rhys! I like Rhys!
