OMGs I can't believe I'm finally posting this! Here's my pride and joy, the story that has kept me occupied for over 3 years. Have to say it's probably the best thing I've ever written. *smirk* Not that I'm egoistic or anything...
Feedback will be greatly appreciated!
Once again Harry felt like he was singled out, but for once he found it a good feeling.
Smiling a slightly nervously, he looked around and nodded at the teachers sitting around the large round table. Yuletide in Hogwarts and he was the only student around.
At least this way he didn't have to sit on the Gryffindor table all alone.
Harry was glad he wasn't back at the Private Drive where he had to evade Dudley's snide comments and Uncle Vernon's wandering hands that always made him feel so dirty. Harry had already decided he was not going to go back to that house, not even to visit. Not for birthdays, not for Christmas. Not for Easter or Midsummer or Guy Fawkes' day or Thanksgiving or Hanukkah or New Years either. Never again.
Harry wasn't even ashamed of his decision.
Harry didn't see family the traditional way; to him family was the group living in the Gryffindor tower. It was the cottage full of redheads, Sirius and Remus and the memory of his parents; gentle Lily who had been loved by all and admired for her wisdom, and heroic and handsome James who had always been Harry's biggest role model.
Right now his life was here, at Hogwarts. Surrounded by familiar faces everywhere, Harry relaxed a little and then smiled at his teachers. This was better than anything he knew. Just to sit here and relax.
He looked around the table, smiling and nodding at his teachers. Apparently none of them had any private life, every single witch and wizard spending the whole holiday right there.
Dumbledore and McGonagall were whispering together, a stray giggle escaping both every now and then. Some of the other teachers were sitting next to them. Others had finished eating dinner, standing here and there in the Great Hall with glasses of spiked pumpkin juice in their hands.
A dark form drew Harry's gaze to him.
There was Snape again, looking almost unrecognizable under the flickering candlelight. Harry closed his eyes for a moment, unable to completely hide his emotions. Seeing Snape like this was a revelation; the man looked relaxed, even happy.
As if sensing Harry's thoughts, Snape turned to stare at him, his lips curling into a reluctant smile. Harry answered the smile immediately.
He had to wonder if the candlelight was playing tricks with his mind, for it looked like the nasty Potions master had washed his hair for the evening. Strange, how sometimes it was almost as if the man deliberately made himself look uglier than he really was.
The sight made Harry feel hot for some reason he couldn't fathom.
Harry shoveled his pudding, smiling to himself and sighing slightly. So many things he still had to do. Even though he and Snape had managed to finish the Animagius potion, he had to work on controling on his fierce black feline form. There was Voldie and his minions and graduating and other evil things waiting, but at least now Harry was confident he was going to survive.
Working so hard on his transformation had ensured he would pass Potions in flying colors. Even Snape had mentioned on his improved skills, pleased with his new star student.
Snape. Funny how all his thoughts eventually lead to him. He was such an enigma, such a mystery, a man of surprises and hidden things. He was certain that in time he would uncover every mystery and see into the real man behind all the sarcasm. He thought he might even start liking him.
Friendship. Or maybe even more. Much more.
Blushing a little at the thought of sharing more with Snape, Harry fidgeted on his seat, willing his prick to stay relaxed; a task that took most of his concentration. This was no place or time for silly and really unthinkable thoughts he'd had about his Potions master recently.
He barely noticed Albus Dumbledore's gentle and wise twinkling gaze following him and the approving smile on the wrinkly face.
This was going to be an interesting winter...

TBC!
Part 2 will be posted in two days or so, and then there'll be a new chapter every few days. Considering the size of this fic, I'll still be posting this December... :D
So, thoughts? Liked it? Hated it?
There's also a 'funny' introduction to the fic from Snape's POV. If anyone's interested, I can post that here too.
