Why do authors need beta readers?

Here's a sentence from my mega Potterfic:

He'd hoped their time here would be a time for him and Harry to spend more time together.

OMGs! I must have been on crack!

So maybe this whole polishing thing with me reading and re reading the whole pile of crap isn't such a bad thing after all. :D Sure hope my betas will spank me if I try to actually post something like that.
