Sep. 30th, 2004 12:56 amAm now a bit pissed off about Stargate.
Funny, isn't it? I didn't really care about the concept of making the old gods be aliens who enslaved the human kind. Just a tv show, right?
Er... Not.
Tonight's episode with Bastet and Kali and Morrigan really made me angry. Kind of hypocritical, I know, but it never really hit me before they used my gods in the show.
The show is kinda PC, 'cause we haven't seen Jesus appear as a Jaffa who fought against the Goa'uld and then went in history as the son of a methaphorical god instead of as a servant to an oppressor. Where is Muhammed, who sends the faithfuls to actually battle against the 'false gods' like any good Tok'ra would? How about Buddha, the only really kind and nice Goa'uld?
See?
Maybe it's because the Old Gods have become simply a myth that the PTB feel it cool to use them. Okay, so it's entertainment, but the gods they use in their series are real to some of us. Not just to the damn teen wiccans who want to dye everything black and be so fucking cool in their semi-goth look and huge pentagrams. Paganism is different from atheism, and with the worship of the gods, it truly is a religion. For some reason no one seems to want to take it seriously as in yes, people do believe in the old deities and might be offended.
But whatever.
Am not going to write any angry letters (the rant here is enough...) to anyone or stop watching the show. It's not a bad show. I just wish people would make it equal and not in the 'let's ridicule all the old gods from Scandinavia to Egypt and then leave our own belief systems untouched' way.

American Gods.
Date: 2004-09-30 04:39 am (UTC)Look at this lot: http://www.parentstv.org/ptc/shows/main.asp?shwid=218 .
The Parents' Television Council is a supposedly non-partisan group, with a strong conservative, Christian bias. They hate Buffy, Angel, Charmed, etc. They don't appear to mind SG-1.
Troubling.

Dear gods, they actually list the cuss words on every show? Like... How sick is that? These people are insane!
About Stargate; It's weird how I don't mind the airheaded way they portray the gods in Xena! The show doesn't take itself seriously, and I find it endearing, not offending.
Would really like Stargate address the whole religion thing more. They stepped on the road of moral concepts and faith, so they should have the guts to deal with the issue properly.

They won't though, will they? Only the biggest religions have enough clout to 'defend' their image, so they'll run screaming from offending certain faiths, but not all.
