Jul. 1st, 2004 04:02 pmOkay, so the previous post saying it was made today was actually made yesterday, but due to whatever problems with the LJ was able to post it today.
Confusing? I have no idea.
Book pimpage
I actually read a book. :D Yes, it's not as usual these days as it was when I hadn't found slash yet. Back then it was at least a book a day.
Nowadays I read books I've already read a few times or then I start new ones and drop them like a hot potato after a chapter or three. I can deal with stupidity with fanfic. With books? No.
Am also really blaah about the 'huge bestsellers' and 'must read!' books that are usually not worth the hype.
Can you see there's a 'but' coming up?
I was intrigued by the things I read about Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code, so I decided to buy the book. The fact that it was called both a huge bestseller and a must read book made me hesitate, but I went to the bookstores anyway. Of course there were stacks of the book in Finnish, but not one copy in English.
[insert your own rant about translations here]
Went to browse through a few webshops and found the book and also a previous one (with the same main character) and decided to order them both. Read through 'Angels and Demons' yesterday and am now starting the 'Da Vinci Code'.
Okay. Angels and Demons. A conspiracy novel about a secret brotherhood that opposes religion? A main character who studies Christian symbols? A 600+ pages book that happens during 24 hours and deals with the ever popular concepts of science against religion and the Catholic faith?
My thing? Well, not really. I've read so many books that claim to view stuff dispassionate or from many angles that have proven out to be raving rants about why the Christians are always right and how paganism is such a bad thing. Being a pagan myself, that can be slightly annoying.
That's why I was very surprised about this book. It didn't preach. It didn't glorify any one thing. It was also very easy to read even with the enormous amount of church politics and tradition described there. Brown explained everything without the good old professor mode. The facts were scattered between contemplation and dialogue, so that there weren't exhausting paragraphs full of important information to be skimmed over by the impatient reader.
Yes, some of the things in the book were quite obvious and easy to see from the beginning. But there were lots of important stuff that weren't. And that made the book enjoyable. I always hate the 'mystery' novels where the baddie is obvious. On the other hand, I also hate the ones where the bad guy is someone we saw just once.
Will definitely read the Da Vinci Code now. Am hoping it will be as good (or better) as Angels and Demons. Defy the hype, book! Don't be simple and annoying!
/rant
On other news, my back is still aching, but it's not killing me anymore. Will not go out today. Am definitely going to spend the day on the couch reading.
Too bad, since it actually looks nice out there. Will have to meet Dlasta and Mousie tomorrow and definitely need to shop for flip-flops and am not sure I'm really up to it and even if I am, it'll probably rain or something. Stupid back. Stupid, stupid back!

Date: 2004-07-01 12:07 pm (UTC)Don't know if Da Vinci Code is any good since I've only read the prologue, but I liked Angels and Demons very much. The modern day action was very well balanced with obscure Renaissance myths.

Date: 2004-07-01 02:49 pm (UTC)If you want Angels and Demons, I can bring it as well. If I remember. Gods, feels like my head's wrapped in cotton candy. Fluffy, sticky and sickeningly sweet. :D
