Later on, Algren always thought it was the ninja attack that changed everything.
But it was a lie.
It happened before he ever pressed his back against Katsumoto's and warded off the attackers, when they fought as one against those who would destroy the samurai way of life. Before joining together for that one night, the dark filled with whispered words neither of them could barely understand, all important things spoken with touch only.
It happened during the simple play the villagers had prepared; true mirth in the dark eyes, Katsumoto laughing at himself.
That's when he fell in love.
