annoyed fandom rant
Nov. 1st, 2005 11:21 amOoookay.
The SGA fandom seems to be veering off to the direction that is sadly the fate of so many popular fandoms these days.
Collective insanity is taking over.
Ever since Ford became mr. Half Wraith guy and we got Ronon and Caldwell, there have been people lamenting over the loss of the Happy Smiling Ford. McKay/Sheppardists have been mourning the fact that there's been no post-Trinity smoochies and why the hell can't Sheppard just give McKay some slack alreadyand bathe him?
Now there's a rumor that someone from SG-1 might become a recurring character in season 3, and the fans have gone totally overboard with the noooooo!
*tears off her hair*
Okay. I'm a fangirl and there are many 'smart' things the PTB that's made my blood pressure rise these past ten years or so. We had the Sentinel thing and the DanielJackson thing and the Mulder thing. We had the very obvious Garak cop out, Sorkin leaving tWW and mr, Asshat Whedon doing his best to ruin the final season of Angel.
Not to mention personally annoying stuff as in the lalalalalalalalala in Potterverse.
Was I annoyed when stuff happened? You betcha! Did I contemplate on clicking that counter saying Save Our Daniel? You betcha! Did I make it my life's goal to bring Mulder back or die trying?
No.
And I didn't go all nuts when they hinted that a certain SG-1 character would cross over to SGA.
Honestly, people, why on earth should something like that matter so much? I can understand the death thing and the kicking someone out of a series thing and the cancelling in the middle of a plot arch thing. But the whole panic over something mentioned in an interview? Yeah. Good idea to start panicking.
Also, it seems to have something to do with the current idea in fandoms where everyone's an artist and every fan thinks her opinion is the right one and should be heard.
Message board flooded with stupid rants, character bashing and screaming. I don't know if it's just a very annoying loud bunch of three stupid fans, or is the mentality of 'OMGs everything must happen the way I want and I want it now' spreading.
Be loud and make a stand over things that really matter when it becomes clear that the PTB are going to be total idiots. A complete meltdown over a rumor is just stupid.
Very soon, I bet we'll see lots of LJ forums and message boards full of people speculating over the way character X's appearance on SGA will mean that they kill Zelenka or turn Ronon into a woman or make McKay a happy puppy guy. Then we see rants about how this and that expert fan sees the psychodynamic change in the Atlantis team and how the series will turn into a technobabble joke.
Guess what? I didn't really care who you thought was the Half Blood Prince before the 6th Potter book came out. Neither did I want to read long pages full of speculations over every damn hint the author gave the fans. Just as long rants and strangely justified indignation over whatever character don't interest me at all.
Writing a fanfic over speculations can be cool. There you can make a total ass of yourself go all AU and then have a story to show to people long after the speculations die off. Whining and ranting and boring the hell out of people just leaves you posts full of stupid whinge.
*breathe*
I don't know why this whole thing bothers me so much. Maybe it's because I'm getting older and don't have the same energy to be all enthusiastic over every single rumor about my fandoms. Or maybe I'm appalled over the hubris some people seem to have; I am making these comments the PTB should listen just because they had the audacity to kill my fav redshirt in episode fifty-seven! No, dears. You can rant and rave, but unlike bad fanfic authors who are constantly whining that they have no idea what to write next and would their minions please tell them what should happen in their WIP next, the PTB might listen to fans, but they certainly aren't guided by the loud and obnoxious fangirls who think they're the center of the world.
Personally, I think SGA has lotsa potential they haven't fully started to realize yet. The deaths in the show have been well dealt with, and no, I didn't get attached to often mentioned but twice on screen characters who got killed. I also think that if they really bring that someone from SG-1 to Pegasus, they should be in a penguin form or else it sounds like Mary Sue and could McKay and Sheppard just get a room already.
But if (when) the PTB screw up my show/book/movie, I'll rant and rave. Before that, I'll be a passive little slave and just follow what happens.
And keep my blood pressure in control.
